Expressive Therapy:
Expressive therapies integrate the modalities of dance, drama, literature, music, poetry and the visual arts with the practice of psychotherapy. It uses the entire spectrum of an individual’s innate imagination and creativity to attain optimum affective, behavioural, cognitive and physical functioning.
The main principle that unites the expressive therapy approaches is the belief that we all have an inbuilt movement in our psyche towards healing and wholeness. The expressive therapy methods aim to encourage and cooperate with this natural impulse.
The media employed are Music, Dance, Drama, Writing and Art. The process begins with experience through reflection and conceptualizing to action and on to further experience.
Formal training is any of the art forms is not necessary to explore this form of therapy and age is irrelevant.
